Naming Files                                              Last updates on 12/09/2012
HOW TO USE THE ASSIGNMENT PAGE (WEBSITE) TO GET FILES AND SAVE THEM ON YOUR COMPUTER:

NAMING CONVENTION RULES
WHY FILE NAMING CONVENTIONS (Rules): Prof. Stein sends each of your files to a class website. All files are placed into a single folder. We need to know what is contained in each file (which assignment) and also the student who will receive credit for the work. This file naming system gives all the needed info (student number and assignment name).

YOU WILL BE ASSIGNED CLASS STUDENT NUMBER (prefix): (students)
The Student Number (3 numbers. followed by 1 or 2 letters, followed by a 3 number course) will be given to you during the first class or when you register online with Prof. Stein. (Examples are: 101z601, 124z603, 201zz682). Use this in the beginning of every email subject line or file name as it identifies which your placement in a particular course at your college

CREATE A STUDENT FOLDER WITH YOUR ASSIGNED CLASS STUDENT NUMBER
Create a student folder with just your class student number.
This should be done in the C:\My Documents of your computer. The student folder may also be created directly on your C: drive or on a Flash Drive
This folder will hold all of your course assignments, projects and files..
(Examples are: (11z601, 12z603, and so on).

ALL FILES MUST START WITH YOUR CLASS STUDENT NUMBER (Examples are: 101z601, 124z603, 201zz682).
ALL assignments and files are named by the instructor.
You will name ALL your files beginning with these 3 characters.
This identifies your work!!! Points will be deducted should your file be named incorrectly!

FILE NAMING CONVENTIONS
File names consist of numbers and letters ONLY.
NO special characters may be used (*, &, %, @, !, etc.)
ALL LETTERS MUST BE lower case!!!!!
NO SPACES ARE ALLOWED IN A FILE NAME!!!!!

ASSIGNMENT FILE NAMES
Each course assignment was given a file name by your professor. Each assignment starts with **.
Here are examples

Course Assignment/Homework Name The Same File Named By Student 121z601
**auto.doc 121z601auto.doc
**myphilosophy.doc 121z601myphilosophy.doc

NOTE: No Capitals (all lower case letters with NO spaces)

FILE TYPES
Each program assigns a file extension to tell the computer what type of file has been created. File extensions appear after the file name beginning with a "." . Typically the file extension is 3 characters (sometimes 2 or 4 characters). Students should be familiar with these common file extensions:

Extension File Type   Extension File Type
*.doc Microsoft Word Document   *. jpg Photograph File (typically)
*.xls Microsoft Excel Document   *.wav Sound File also *.mps and *.rmi
*.html Internet Web File   *.mpg Media Player Video File also *.mpeg
*.ppt Microsoft Powerpoint   *.mov Quicktime Video File
*.pps Microsoft Powerpoint Show   *.swf Flash File

HIERARCHY - (File Architecture)
Each course assignment should be placed in your Student Folder.
ALL your student files will be placed in your student folder
Example of the Architecure for student 121z601 will be
C:\My Documents(your computer hard drive)
        121z601 (Student Folder)
                121z601auto.doc (Assignment- a Word Document)
                121z601myphilosophy.doc (Assignment- a Word Document)
                121z601pic1.jpg (Assignment- a photograph of student 121z601)
121z601intro1.mpg (Assignment - a video file lesson introduction by student 121z601)

HOW TO USE THE ASSIGNMENT PAGE (WEBSITE) TO GET FILES AND SAVE THEM ON YOUR COMPUTER:

Directions: Each student was assigned a Class Student Number by Prof. Stein upon registration.
Students in Touro EDSE601 student number will be 3 characters - 2 digits followed by the letter "z".
(Examples are: 101z601, 124z603, 201zz682)
1. Create a Student Folder, on the C drive of your computer, with your EDSE601 student number (101z601, 124z603, 201zz682)
ALL YOUR ASSIGNMENTS SHOULD BE SAVED INTO THIS Student Folder (in C:\MyDOCUMENTS)
2. Open each assignment by clicking on the file name. Assignments will open in Microsoft Word.
3. Complete the information in the Blue Dashed Box replacing the ** with your 3 character EDSE Student Number ( 101z601, 124z603, 201zz682).
4. Save this file into your Student Folder (SAVE AS) with the given file name.
Example for student 121z601:: Open **auto.doc and save it in your 121z601 folder with the file name 121z601auto.doc
Similarly the final **myphilosophy.doc will be "SAVED AS" 121z601myphilosophy.doc
5. Complete the assignment and click on FILE/SAVE. This will save your work to your computer.
6. Close MS WORD and attach your file as directed (to either BB Homework or BB Discussion Board Forum.

SUGGESTION FOR PORTABLITY: Purchase a 128 Flash Drive at your computer store. Create the STUDENT FOLDER ( 101z601, 124z603, 201zz682) on the Flash
Drive. Save all work into the FLASH DRIVE STUDENT FOLDER. Now you can work at most libraries. This is much better than saving to a CD.
IMPORTANT: Depending on a number of factors (Internet service speed, browser and version, computer defaults) it may be necessary to save the assignment from the assignment website first and then open that file directly from Microsoft Word, before completing the assignment.

ALWAYS KEEP A BACKUP!!!!
