E-portfolio (Electronic Portfolio)

"Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together."  Vincent Van Gogh

Understanding E-portfolio and How the Internet Works with addresses and URL's
This is a MUST READ for the novice in web creation as it explains the Internet in simple and familiar terms.

Many are unfamiliar with (and are frightened at the very thought of) creating web pages (an electronic portfolio). For that reason I have developed a "Glass House Analogy" (below) that serves well to explain concepts in a "Non-Tech" fashion. Below are FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).

Still need help, support or advice? Go to Blackboard FAQ Forum and ask a question or offer support to your classmates. This counts towards class participation and adds to your grade!!!

In some Blackboard classes there is a BBDB forum **e-portfolios so that you can inform others that your site is up, or that you have a new page, video or something cool. You can also comment on the e-portfolios of classmates.

This course includes a technology component. Most know that technology can be used to search and obtain information. It is most powerful however when YOU use technology to organize and disseminate your gathered information to students colleagues and the community. For that reason all are asked to create a FREE website at Google Sites (we will show you how)! If after contacting FAQ and not getting the help /support that you need from your colleagues, I will help by arranging a time for a group video conference. All you need is to be in front of your computer and I will show you right from here! OH the POWER of Technology!!!

The Glass House Scenario
Glass House Analogy - A Video

I agree to abide by the NYC DOE Internet Acceptable Use Policy (IAUP).

The Whitehouse is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There are many houses on that street. (look at the diagram on the left)The street is Pennsylvania Avenue. The number is 1600.
If you drive by the Whitehouse and the window to the Oval Office is open and the lights are on you could look in. Perhaps you can see the color of the walls, pictures, signs on the wall, a TV and more.

Consider that your E-Portfolio Website is your Glass House in the country. Anyone driving by your glass house can view the foyer, the wallpaper of the room, and even pictures on the wall. They can even see what is playing on your TV hanging on the wall. They can see other rooms as well (different web pages).       To send a visitor to view your glass house in the country you will need to give them your address in the country.

Your E-portfolio is your "Glass House" which also has an address on the Internet, which will be given to you. It will have a number and a street. Your complete address ( to see from outside your house) would be student.webhop.org/touroXXX ( XXX is touro (first letter of first name last name with no spaces or capitals). Example for Dan Stein would be student.webhop.org/tourodstein. Note student.webhop.org  is the street  and tourodstein is the number of the house

At some point you will need to get into your house to add text, pictures, etc..
Go to the street student.webhop.org and answer 2 questions ( email = the number of your house and password which was given to you) and you can enter. Another way is to go in front of your house ( the full address) and click "sign in".. It will ask you for the same email/password.

First question, What is your email - That's the number of the house. For the example above tourodstein would be the number of the house.
Your password will be given to you upon completion of your IAUP assignment in Blackboard.

ALL students who create e-portfolios should follow the NYCDOE IAUP.  NEVER put up sensitive information!!! Be wise and err on the side of safety. PLEASE do not show youngsters how you make such a site or give out your username and password. ALWAYS LOG OUT!!!

FAQ Answers

What is an e-portfolio?
Simply stated an E-Portfolio (electronic portfolio) is a website, where the content is designed to express the accomplishments of a student, teacher, school, or class. Therefore it is content driven. An in depth understanding can be found by reading Wikipedia E-Portfolio.

Why use a FREE program (google sites)?

  • A free program allows the participant to create, own and administer as many sites as they wish. This is an incentive to professors and teachers who may wish to establish sites for their family, another business, etc.
  • There is no cost to the college for maintenance.
  • Whether the program is free, or purchased is not really the important issue. The issue is can we get people to use it! Consider how many have Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel available at home, school or at libraries and CANNOT use it effectively. It is our experience that these, programs and technology itself is underutilized.
  • Learn with tech assumes a greater goal than to introduce and teach a program. Our attempt is to have the program work effectively for your organization and your staff.

How does Prof. Stein aid in the  E-Portfolio program?

  • We will aid in the set up of your website
  • Each student has full control of their site.
We create a naming convention for each staff website (similar to email naming conventions) Each participant can access and edit their own site.
  • We aid in the set up a Disclaimer policy, stating that the college school assumes no liability.
We train the participant in what Should Not go on the website. For example personal information and copyrighted materials.
  • We train and link to the NYC Internet Acceptable Use Policy (provide peer review)
  • Most important - We train participants in a manner that most will use the E-Portfolio for the college/school.
  • Thus our goal is to have the E-Portfolio system utilized by students and staff to obtain positions, show their teaching skills (video, lessons and worksheets), always reflecting positively on the college.

What if I am in another country or another state?

  • E-portfolios can be established and maintained from any online computer in the world (except China where it is restricted)
  • Currently this system has set up sites in Pakistan and Mexico and the list is increasing.

Can I see a sample site working?

Where can we find out more about Professor Stein's work with E-Portfolios?

Can I get a test E-Portfolio site, and what is the cost?
  • FREE - Just learn how.

How do I access my e-portfolio?

  • mail.google.com (special gmail name, username and password).
  • Go to you site and at the bottom center click "sign in"

How do I use google sites to add picture, documents and more?

Best method search youtube.com for tutoials. Search Youtube.com for "Google Sites Tutorials"

Try Radford Education a series

All this proves that you are an exemplary teacher.
All pages linked from the Home page with a link back to the home page.

How do I add a page? Is there a best method?
